Sometimes I just want to shout it

I was driving the other night and "I'm Coming Out" came on the radio.  Immediately I started tapping my fingers on the steering wheel and whipping my hair back and forth.  Why is it that that song always comes on the "family" soft rock radio stations?  Any-who, The song wanted me to dawn a rainbow feathered headpiece and hop in line at a gay pride parade.  Then I realized that the first time I ever said I was gay out loud wasn't exactly an exciting occasion.  I think its important that we all take time and say that we're gay with a little more excitement.

A Click Away

I found this movie on Homochic.com, one of my new favorite websites.  I really enjoyed it 1.  because it has men in it and 2. because it deals with a very interesting subject matter.  It is called "A Valentine to Loneliness."  It deals with the single gay world, which I find fascinating.  I myself am part of the single gay world and I find it quite fun, but not for the same reasons others might.  I enjoy the freedom and the fact that I am not tied down to another twink...or tied down by another twink.  This movie deals with the group of single me who use websites such as manhunt and manroulette.

What has been so fascinating to me is that this act of having sex with somebody you don't even know has started to become a cultural norm in the gay world, or at least in the town I live in.  And to be completely honest and personal, I don't get it.  If I don't know you, I don't want your hands to be anywhere on my body, and certainly not your mouth.  Do you even brush your teeth?  floss?  mouthwash?  manscape? To me, it lessens the value of sex--which in my mind is the ultimate expression of love and not some feel good sensation--that's what your hand is for.  I prefer to put on a pair of heels and dance around my apartment in underwear to Celine Dion, and maybe do a little vacuuming while I'm at it--but that may just be me, actually, that probably is just me.

However, when I was watching this movie, I understood it, kind of, for a brief moment.  Not to say that I will start doing it, but it makes sense to me.  And that is what art should do.

It Runs in the Family

Art runs in my family like the runs in my panty hose.  My grandfather was a Carpenter and a painter and my siblings and I have inherited that desire for the arts.  My sister is a graphic designer as well as an artist and my brother does everything but theatre and dance pretty much.  It is interesting to me that this is so common in all three of us.  Nature vs. nurture?  Who cares, we're fabulous and that's all that matters.  I remember being at the beach as a child and we would watercolor the sunsets every night.  No wonder I'm a homo.  Above I have displayed works from my sisters website, www.lucyhalcomb.com.  The first one is a project my brother helped my sister with.  She drew the faces and my brother came in and drew their hair and bodies.  I love it!  The other three works are done by my sister.  I think my parents did a great job creating us.  Good for them for having us!

Glitter and be Gay

I saw this commercial a few weeks ago and was stunned.  I mean who doesn't love a commercial in slow motion with piano playing in the background.  But what really caught my eye, and I'm sure you have already guessed, is the bowl of glitter that flies through the air.  I found out that this film is done by the same company that did the film Nuit Blance, Spy Films.  They make some pretty damn hot films.

Slow motion soda explosion from David Coiffier on Vimeo.
slow motion punches from cody kern on Vimeo.
I have had a recent obsession when slow motion.  And I don't mean your typical discovery channel slow motion with a cheetah running, but rather, HD slow motion.  These three videos above are faboosh!  The last one is hilarious!  Although, I would never want to be in that video because it would totes ruin my hair.  Enjoy this Frigay and take it slow--stop and smell the scented lube.

The Secret is in the Garden

Looking for something to do?  Well ladies and genitalia do I have a show for you!  If you like Harry Potter mixed with a little bit more color and a few more ghosts, then you will love the musical The Secret Garden.  It is being put on at Theatre Tuscaloosa and opens tomorrow night, Friday October 22nd.  But I have a hush hush secret for you:  Tonight's final dress rehearsal is "Pay-What-You-Can" night.  Just come to the Bean Brown Theatre on Shelton States campus and bring what you got!  Performances for the show are scheduled for 7:30 on October 22, 23, 28, 29, and 30 and 2:00 matinees on October 24, 27, and 31.  Tickets are $22 for adults, $17 for seniors, and $10 for students and children.
Also, the show stars my wonderful work as hair and makeup designer.  And better than that, it has Zacc Kimbrell in it.  He is a regular performer at Guerrilla and he has the purest voice that will make you wet...yourself.  I posted a video of his most recent Guerrilla performance.  Hope to see you all there!

Wednesdays are a Drag

Bianca, Queens of Drag: NYC Ep3 from Gay Com on Vimeo.
Acid Betty/Epiphany, Queens of Drag: NYC Ep5 from Gay Com on Vimeo.
Gay.com has been doing some very interesting work with some drag queens in NYC.  They have an online show called Queens of Drag:  NYC.  These girls have got it!  I chose my two favorite ones, Bianca Del Rio and Acid Betty.  I got to see Bianca perform when I spent New Years '09 in New Orleans, and girl did I do it hard.  She is a great stand up comedian who is not afraid to put a run in your hose, so to speak.  Acid Betty just looks fierce, kind of like someone you would see while hallucinating...on salvia.  These two videos take a pretty intimate look into a very masked world.  Enjoy and keep it gay, keep it gay, keep it gay!

4 for you Dave Wojnaro! You go Dave Wojnaro!

Togay I bring you the art of David Wojnarowicz.  And if you can teach me to pronounce his name, I will pay you in my currency of choice:  glitter.  David was a painter, photographer, writer, film maker, and performance artist.  And he was gay!  "Four for you Dave Wojnaro!  You go Dave Wojnaro!"  Above are his works entitled  Untitled, Untitled, Fuck You Faggot Fucker, and his trailer for his film "Postcards From America."  Unfortunately, David died of Aids in 1992 at the young age of 37.  But his work has resonated throughout the gay world and the art world for a long time.  His work is simply grGAYt (a mix between the word great and gay, I'm coining it).

B'Way Sings OUT

Some lovely voices from Broadway have come together to write, sing, and produce a song, "It Gets Better," in light of the recent suicides.  I also included one of my favorite classics that gets me every time.  And she is a famous ginger.  None other than ANNIE, the equivalent of a younger annoying sister.  But this song is a classic for a reason.

This is just the sweetest video I have ever seen.  Gosh, I never use that word--sweet.  Anywho, I just thought I would share it with you on this lovely Monday.  Hope it kicks your ass into to geat for the week.  My goal for the week:  be gayer than ever before.  What's yours?

Short but Sweet

This animated short is created by 6 different students.  Clearly they're French, in case you didn't realize that title isn't English.  But fashion is the universal language of the world.  This video shows a dressmaker attempting to save the world "one stitch at a time" (said like the announcer voice guy who says "as the world turns")

Ginger Drag

Happy Frigay!  Here is your weekly dose of drag.  These photographs are done by Leo Herrera. Leo is the founder of one of my new favorite websites, Homochic.com.  Most of his work deals with homosexual themes and they are yummy.  And I sure do love this one.  This queen looks like barrels of fun, although I would never cross her--she's a ginger drag queen which means she is twice as bitchy.  I think I might shape my eyebrows like that this weekend.  Free facelift.  Have a happy twinkend!

Got Milk?

"My Name is Harvey Milk" Short Film, 2007 Dir by Leo Herrera from Leo Herrera on Vimeo.
"All young people, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, deserve a safe and supportive environment in which to acheive their full potential."  -Harvey Milk

"Hope will never be silent." -Harvey Milk

This here is a haunting yet beautiful video of Harvey Milk's political will.  What an amazing man he was.  But what baffles my mind is that there are still equal rights issues going on in this country.  Can we not set aside our differences and realize that we are all humans and deserve to be treated equally?  How do we change this?  We, the LGBT community seems to be looking for a leader, but I do not think that is where the solution lies.  I believe it is in the individual, and the power of small acts to create a synergy of change.  As Mother Teresa said, "Do not wait for a leader; do it alone, person to person."

Secrets Secrets are no fun, Unless you put them on the web!

PostSecret: Confessions on Life, Death and God from Frank Warren on Vimeo.
I LOVE Postsecret.com.  If you haven't been alive for the past few years, then you probs don't know about it, but otherwise, you probs do know about it.  I often find myself stumbling into my apartment at 3am on a Saturday night and I immediately open my computer to their website to see their new secrets.  What I find so fascinating about the website is the idea that every single human being has a secret.  How Uniting!  This website has even started a "thing" between me and my friend.  We randomly text each other secrets to each other.  I think I shall share my first one I ever sent to her for all of you.  Let me preface it by saying that I had platinum blond hair as a child.  Here goes:  I use to pray for red hair, and then I got it.  Share a secret today!

WWJW (What Would Jesus Wear?)

Jason Alper, a pop culture artist, is not best known for his works of art.  He is best known for his work on the screen.  He is the costume designer for Sacha Baron Cohen in his films Borat and Bruno.  Now girls, I know some of you hated Bruno.  I even threw a heel at the television within the first 30 minutes of the show.  But then I later regretted breaking the glass surface because it was the only reflective surface I had in my house.  Now I can no longer spend hours looking at myself.  But I digress.  After those movies, Mr. Alper decided to go back to his roots and work in the art world.  His artwork is just FABULOUS!  Who doesn't love a Louis Vuitton Jesus or his supposed wife, The Mona Lisa (for all you DaVinci Code fans out there).  The first work is called "What Would Jesus Wear?"  I vote we make bracelets that say WWJW--the world would be a much more attractive place if people dressed for the Lord.  The other one is called "The Mona Lisa."  Surprise, Surprise.  Enjoy the photos and have a loverly Hump Day!

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

"Good is towing the line, being behaved, being quiet, being passive, fitting in, being liked and great is being messy, having a belly, speaking your mind, standing up for what you believe in, fighting for another paradigm, not letting people talk you out of what you know to be true."

Water is the essence of moisture

Fluid Sculpture from Charlie Bucket on Vimeo.

I have a fascination with water.  It is one of the most temperamental substances on earth.  It can cause damage to an entire city, grow a tree, moisturize a body, or excessively dry out your skin.  It is almost as bad as Naomi Campbell. When an artist can harness the sinfully delicious power of water, I am amazed. The first video is from a company called Casual Profanity.  They are a clothing company who does experimental work. The second is from the artist William Pye.  He is a water sculpture who works with acrylic, metal, and water.  His work is just too cute to boot.  Have a lovely Sunday.  Don't forget to do your pore refining facial mask and to moisturize for the week ahead.

Her hands must be so soft.

Girl, you better work that sand!  Remember sand art?  You know, at the elementary school carnival where you poured colored sand into a jar.  I always did a monochromatic theme, so ahead of my time.  Anyway, this is NOT that type of sand art...its actually art.  This is Kseniya Simonova, from the Ukraine.  She gets a free exfoliation every time she works.  But I bet her nails are all kinds of nasty.  Enjoy!

Avatar, this is Drag. Drag, this is Avatar.

These lovely ladies are the creation of photographer Michael Johnstone.  When I first saw these photos, my year long dream of Avatar in drag came true.  They kind of make me want to be a housewife, especially if I can be that colorful.  The complete series of photos is called Mrs. Vera's Daybook.  The character Mrs. Vera is Michael's friend David Faulk, who is a painter himself.  I hope you enjoy his humorous look at drag.  Also, for you viewing enjoyment, I found this cool sound/visual art piece.  They really nail the image the sound is making, if that makes sense.  Enjoy, and have a happy Thursgay.

Be an Enemy

Right now I am participating in a production of Henrik Ibsen's play An Enemy of the People here at the University of Alabama.  This production is not quite the gay soiree you would expect to find me in.  It is about a doctor, Dr. Stockmann, who discovers the water supply to his medical baths is poisoned and is putting its visitors in harms way (circa Erin Brockovich, but with a lot less cleavage and ankle).  He lets the town know the problem and they turn on him labeling him as "An Enemy of the People."

This political play has much relevance to todays society even though it was written in 1882.  Dr. Stockmann can easily be compared to a gay rights activist standing up for what he believes in--against the ideas of the majority.  Whether you have seen this play or not, I encourage everyone to be Enemies of the People.  Stand up for what you believe in and fight for it with every shard of glitter you own.  Paddle turn those conservatives away, and make a difference!  We are Human and we are Beautiful!

I like sparkly things

Nuit Blanche from Spy Films on Vimeo.

After a nice weekend of little sleep, I have returned to the web.  While I sat in my robe and slippers enjoying a nice cucumber peel mask, trying to get rid of the bags under my eyes, I came across this video on Vimeo (such a lovely website).  The twinkle in the glass caught my eye like a sequin dress in a girls closet.  It is visually stunning, and I love the music.  Although, as romantic as the video is, there is NO way I would get my shoes wet or waste a perfectly good glass of wine.  Those are total deal breakers.  Have a gay Sunday!
